RACIAL WEALTH DISPARITY

president lyndon johnson, during the detroit uprising of 1967, created the kerner commission to draft a report on civil disorders, so-called "race riots". the 600 plus page report released a year later said "...our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white—separate and unequal.” while society has evolved, there is little progress; the sort of blatant racism that characterized the 60s is barely relegated to history and institutional racism remains vibrant, as evidenced by the widening racial wealth disparity-- a kerner report postscript released in february 2018 remarks on this.
currently in detroit, and most other communities of color, there are two factions vying to create equitable communities and close the racial wealth gap. one group is focused on self determination and community agency, while others use philanthropy and a free market approach. using the problem of food access, we will discuss the way forward over delicious food & strong drink.
